Our story
Our founder David H. McConnell was a progressive pioneer, an impressive visionary, a courageous game-changer, and above all, a champion of women.
But he didn’t set out to create a beauty company. He was a travelling book salesperson who offered beauty products as a gift. He soon realised customers were more interested in the free perfume samples than the books.
From a small New York City office, McConnell mixed our first fragrances himself, and recruited a team of women to be sales Representatives.
It was a radical business model in 1886, but McConnell believed in the power of community, and was passionate about giving women economic freedom.

Our breast cancer promise
We’ve been at the forefront of the fight against breast cancer over the last 30 years. With the Avon Foundation for Women, we have raised $947m for breast cancer causes and funded 16.6m breast cancer screenings globally.

A global stand against animal testing
Our goal is to deliver products to meet our customers’ needs without compromising our commitment to animal welfare, our high product safety standards or our adherence to regulatory requirements. By investing in how we develop innovation for China and in some cases changing distribution channels, we have been able to deliver this landmark change. Globally, none of Avon’s products will be tested on animals.
